5 Hotels To Stay In Douro Valley Portugal

hotels in Douro Valley

More and more visitors are choosing the Douro Valley wine country to spend their days in Portugal. But what are the good options and what are the pros and cons of staying 80-100 Km away from Porto?

First of all, the Portuguese Douro wine country is located about an hour and a half away from the city of Porto, in Northern Portugal.
It is easily accessed by car as the highways make it very simple and safe to drive.
There is also a train connection from Porto to Pinhão, although not a very practical one…
Daily cruise ships sail from Porto every day, but during the Summer it can get very busy and not a very enjoyable ride.

If you are a wine lover and you look forward to explore the region you have two options. Either you rent a car or you hire a tour operator (like us!).

Our tailor made tour itineraries make it possible to pick you up at whatever location you are at!
Here is a list of some very fine hotels to make your stay incredible!

Octant Douro

With a swimming pool and a SPA, this hotel is located on the south bank of the river, near Castelo de Paiva. Technically in terms of wine regions, despite located on the Douro river, this is Verde wine country.
Nevertheless we couldn’t go without mentioning this fantastic hotel.

It also has an excellent choice of wines and a dedicated sommelier.

Casa do Rio

Located in the Superior Douro, near Vila Nova de Foz Côa, this fantastic hotel is a masterpiece of architecture. Furthermore it offers a wide range of activities, wine tastings and services.
It belongs to the wine tourism project of Quinta do Vallado and it is the winner of several Tourism Awards.

Casal dos Capelinhos

Owned by Quinta Nova Estates, this is a property where you will not only be able to relax and enjoy the surroundings but also have experiences around the wine. The place is an old winery where wine used to be made the traditional way, with foot treading. That’s where a modern reception lobby is at, ready to welcome you!

Casa do Romezal

Owned by two sibblings, this is a wine estate that is located right near Régua, but also close to the Viewpoint of Sao Leonardo de Galafura. We have a picnic basket option when booking our tours and that’s where we usually have lunch! Margarida is super kind and her brother even hosts wine tastings, of their own wine brand called Gueda.

Morgadio da Calçada

With 8 rooms, this hotel is the result of a major refurbishing of stables and wine warehouses and it dates back to 1683. Their wines are the fruit of a partnership with Niepoort and there is the option of having dinner every night!
